London: Woman killed in Hackney shooting

A 42-year-old woman has died and two other people – including a teenager – have been wounded in a shooting in east London.

The Metropolitan Police said they were found with gunshot wounds after the attack, and a murder investigation had been launched.

A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were taken to hospital, where their conditions are being assessed.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far.

The shooting happened in Vine Close, in a small housing development in a cul-de-sac in a very quiet, residential part of Hackney at around 18:30 GMT.

The Met said the female victim died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services and police were “in the process” of informing the female victim’s next of kin.

A police cordon is now in place and a white police tent has been erected to the side of one of the front doors.

Forensic teams are spending time looking at a car stopped in the entrance to the close.

Detective Superintendent Vicky Tunstall described the incident as “shocking” and appealed for witnesses.

In a statement, she continued: “Officers will remain at the scene overnight and will be in the area over the coming days.

“I do not underestimate the impact this incident will have on people in Hackney and I understand the community will want answers about what has happened this evening. We will share further information as our investigation progresses.

“Gun crime has no place on the streets of London and we will do all we can to bring whoever is responsible for this despicable crime to justice.”
