Majority of Indians choose UK for studies

  • Indians find the UK as an affordable destination for pursuing studies, and with a chance to find employment opportunities with a post-study work visa.
In the year ending in June 2023, 150,000 study visas were granted to Indian nationals.
Indian students studying in the UK increased by 54% between June 2022 to 2023, and 42% were for Graduate Route grants.

UK is the most sought destination for Indian students

  • The majority of Indian students want to pursue their studies in the UK, the main reason behind this is that the courses are affordable with an average yearly tuition cost ranging from £10,000 to £38,000, and can complete the course within one year, and students can find part-time jobs and housing on campus with ease.
  • The UK has evolved as one of the most sought-after study-abroad destinations for Indian students since the implementation of the Graduate Route which permits eligible international students to stay for two years after completing a master’s degree and three years after completing a PhD program which allows them to stay and work or look for work.
  • Indian nationals make up the largest group of overseas students studying in the UK by receiving the majority of study visas and 42% of Graduate Route grants.
  • Approximately, 150,000 study visas were granted to Indian nationals for the year ending in June 2023, and the number of Indian students studying in the UK increased by approximately 54% between June 2022 and June 2023.
  • Indian students now receive study grants that are around seven times more than they were in June of last year.

Post-study work visa and employment opportunities

  • According to Lakshmi Iyer, Managing Director of SI-UK, stated that ‘the students find the UK to be very affordable and that the Graduate Immigration Route has been increased. Employment opportunities overseas are important for Indian students, and a post-study work visa is one of the crucial factors.’
  • The visa allows Indian students to work in the UK for a maximum of two years following graduation (three for PhD students). This explains why the majority of Indian students choose the UK to pursue their education as there are excellent job opportunities further with the availability of work visas.
  • The combination of post-study work visas and the opportunities for micro placements for several courses for those who qualify make it appealing and attractive to Indian students.
  • This year, there has been a significant rise in Indian students who want to study in the UK. One of the main reasons is the post-study work visa.
  • The universities and the strong network of alumni in the UK help students create portfolios, and CVs and to look for employment opportunities in companies after they finish their course. Additionally, students get help in finding a part-time job.
  • In addition to being the largest student population in the UK, Indians have received the most number of work visas from the nation in the previous year. Opportunities for students are growing, and Indian investments support 95,000 jobs around the country.
